US CPA Exam Mistakes That Waste Study Time

  1. Ignoring the blueprint: Studying what's interesting instead of what's weighted.
  2. Passive study: Re-reading and highlighting instead of answering questions and recalling from memory.
  3. Simulations last: TBSs are half your score in most sections — practise them from week one.
  4. Not reviewing mistakes: Doing thousands of questions without understanding why you got them wrong.
  5. Admin errors: Letting an NTS expire, booking too late, or applying for a section you can't sit within six months.

Study mistakes

  1. Studying without the blueprint. Spending a week on a topic weighted 5% while skimming one weighted 30%. Fix: allocate time by blueprint weight. See using the blueprints.
  2. Passive learning. Watching lectures and highlighting feels productive but builds little exam skill. Fix: after every session, close your notes and answer questions.
  3. Leaving simulations to the end. TBSs are 50% of the score in five sections (40% in ISC). Fix: one or two simulations per topic from the start.
  4. Counting questions instead of learning from them. Fix: review every wrong answer and every lucky guess — see how to review MCQs.
  5. Memorising answers. Repeating the same question bank until you remember answers inflates your scores. Fix: track first-attempt accuracy.
  6. Studying Ind AS or Indian tax by mistake. Indian candidates often apply familiar rules. Fix: note every US–India difference as you meet it.
  7. Skipping governmental and not-for-profit accounting. It's consistently tested in FAR (and BAR). Fix: give it its own block of time.
  8. No full mock exam. Fix: take at least one timed, four-hour practice exam — the AICPA's free sample tests use the real interface.
  9. Cramming everything into the last week. Fix: cumulative quizzes each weekend so early topics stay fresh.

Exam-day mistakes

  1. Poor time management. Fix: plan time per testlet (e.g. in AUD, about 1.25 minutes per MCQ) and keep the 15-minute standard break.
  2. Leaving questions blank. There's no penalty for wrong answers — always answer.

Admin mistakes

  1. Wasting fees and time on logistics. Applying for a section you can't sit before the NTS expires (no refunds or extensions), booking too late for a Discipline window, or rescheduling inside 60 days (Prometric fees). Fix: apply when ready, book 45 days ahead, and plan Discipline sections around January, April, July and October.
